Pro Tips: [Hs] & [De] – What’s in the bag?

This weeks pro tip: The dangers of “sharps” in destruction devices such as chippers, shredders, mills, grinders and compactors are pretty demonstrable and well understood.  For those PG’s that use metal detectors instead of manual inspection,  a few non-metal items, such as safety glasses, drip feeds and stake stubs, for example, should be noted as projectile hazards.  Top of the list though should be spray bottles, especially since these often contain some form of alcohol (predominately “iso”).  They can not only render a destruction area atmosphere toxic (even if only temporararily,) depending on your process, they can be a dangerous fire hazard since a cloud of iso mixed with air is highly flammable.

Manual sifting is one suggestion but procedure modifications such as adding metal tape to bottles to make them trigger metal detectors or simply numbering bottles and storing them on assigned hooks or in  slots, should prove effective according to PG’s in the field.

Be safe in there!
